1. Concept Development:
The concept for "London Calling" was rooted in the idea of paying homage to Winston Churchill, a quintessential figure in British history, with a punk twist inspired by The Clash's iconic album. The image of Churchill on a telephone was a reference to his famous wartime speeches.
2. Research and Inspiration:
To create an authentic representation, I conducted research on Winston Churchill's appearances, speeches, and the historical context of his time. This research helped inform the visual elements of the label.
3. Illustration:
Winston Churchill on a Telephone: The central element of the label was a custom illustration of Winston Churchill on a telephone, evoking the image of him delivering wartime speeches. This added a unique and historical touch to the design.
English Bulldog: At Churchill's feet, I included an illustration of an English bulldog, symbolizing the indomitable spirit of the UK. The bulldog is a patriotic emblem that complements the historical reference.
4. Aesthetic and Background:
Grunge/Punk Aesthetic: To capture the punk aesthetic inspired by The Clash, I added grunge elements to the design, such as distressed textures, and a raw, rebellious vibe.
UK Flag Background: The UK flag background, often called the Union Jack, was incorporated to reinforce the British identity of the beer. The flag served as a striking backdrop for the illustration.
5. Typography:
I selected typography that had a bold and impactful appearance, aligning with the punk aesthetic. The choice of fonts reinforced the rebellious and energetic tone of the design.
6. Color Palette:
The color palette was influenced by punk rock aesthetics, with bold reds, blacks, and whites creating a dynamic and attention-grabbing look.
7. Composition and Layout:
Careful consideration was given to the arrangement of elements to ensure that Churchill's illustration and the English bulldog were the focal points of the label, while maintaining a balanced and visually engaging layout.
8. Prototyping and Feedback:
Prototypes of the label were created to visualize how it would appear on a beer can. Feedback from peers and potential consumers was sought to fine-tune the design and ensure it effectively captured the historical and punk-inspired elements.
9. Finalization and Production:
The final label design was refined to be high-resolution and print-ready, preserving the intricate details of the illustrations and the grunge/punk elements.
